Immersive Museum TOKYO vol.3
Digital Art Exhibition
IMPRESSIONISM &
JAPONISM

The third installment of the Immersive Museum presents "Impressionism and Ukiyo-e."

During this era, talents such as Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi produced mass-produced Ukiyo-e, intended for widespread consumption. These prints made their way to Paris, igniting the Japonisme movement. Artists like Monet and Degas were influenced by Ukiyo-e, incorporating its elements into their paintings and reshaping them within the Impressionist movement. Post-Impressionists such as Gauguin, Cézanne, and Van Gogh also drew inspiration from Ukiyo-e. The significant impact of Ukiyo-e on Western painting, from the Impressionist era to the modern age, is undeniable.

This exhibition explores the connection between two art forms across continents during a time of limited global communication. Delving into the perspectives of Japanese artists and Parisian painters promises a unique and enriching artistic journey.

Ryo Yoshizawa

Unconfined by traditional methods or schools, Katsushika Hokusai is said to have studied different art styles and explored ukiyo-e throughout his life. Post-impressionist painter Van Gogh also sought new forms of expression and succeeded in creating unprecedented expression with color after discovering ukiyo-e. Art has evolved because of painters and artists who, unconfined by conventions and norms, continually challenged themselves and explored new art.

Ryo Yoshizawa, who has taken on a variety of roles, is set to play an onnagata (female role) kabuki actor in the upcoming movie Kokuho. His approach to learning basic kabuki movements and the cultural background of ukiyo-e, as well as his pursuit of new artistic expression resonate with Katsushika Hokusai and Van Gogh.

This year, Immersive Museum Tokyo will create an immersive space that synchronizes ukiyo-e, produced in Japan, with impressionist paintings by Monet and Van Gogh. We hope that Ryo Yoshizawa, who embodies both strength and beauty, will convey the appeal of these two different styles of art and help visitors experience the connection of great artists across time and space.

Ryo Yoshizawa was born February 1, 1994. Recent appearances include the historical drama Reach Beyond the Blue Sky, PICU: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the Kingdom series, and the Tokyo Revengers series.
